Im looking to move away from my smartphone to using a dedicated ipad mini for flying DD missions with my Phantom 4. Are there any recommendations on model (generation ) or RAM size I need to consider to run both DD and DJI app?

We’ve been running a Mini 5 (32GB) for a little more than a year and have had very few problems.

I also been running a Mini 5, and have a Mini 4 for my back up. I had no problems.

Good to know, thank you for posting! Is your mini 5 used just for operating your drone?
Mini 4 used to crash sometimes when flying large maps - have upgraded to the latest Mini 6 with no issues. The iPad mini is the perfect size for a drone screen. I use a sun hood which clips onto it to provide some cover and improved readability in bright light.

Those are the main apps - I also run Litchi, DJI Fly, UAV forecast, GS Pro and Aloft.

Yeah, I wouldn’t run anything less than a 5 too hard. It will work ok as long as you don’t have a bunch of other stuff loaded on it and have a decent data connection. Offline can be pretty sketchy. The 5 allows us to run email, OneDrive and Plangrid which is the meat of what we need.
It adds some useful features over the standard DJI app and it a good tool to have on your device. I got it as it was required for a workflow I did inspecting cell towers - their SOP required Litchi’s Orbit mode to complete the inspections with specific control over heading and orbit duration.
