Yes, taking cell phone images works. I modeled a bridge for someone in Italy. they took aerial photos with the drone, then for the underside of the bridge, used cell phone pictures.
Worked perfectly.

We have only ever used the Emlid app on Ipad

It moreso depends on what processing software you are using. I fly mostly PPK so I need a device that is much more accurate than your standard camera or cell phone. When you shoot with a cell phone and the right processing software it will stitch just fine, but your accuracies are gone and it will most likely warp the slightly more accurate data around it. I prefer shoot with my drone and the M+/M2 just as I had collected in the air. Alternatively I can shoot with an Olympus hybrid with the hot-shoe connected to the M+/M2.
